Abstract

Drilling is the most common machining process in manufacturing industries for producing holes. Due to non-homogeneity of composite and high roughness of fiber content there occurs delamination in drilling FRP laminates.  The present work focused on drilling GFRP and CFRP using solid type, uncoated carbide drill bit on a Vertical machining center. The requirement of this study is to examine the influence of drilling parameters on FRP laminates using Taguchi L9 orthogonal array. The S/N ratio and ANOVA were used to examine the influence of drilling parameters on delamination. Finally, Fuzzy rule based model is developed to predict the delamination in drilling FRP laminates. From this analysis it is evident that the fuzzy model developed to relate the delamination with drilling parameters provides results with a minimum error of ± 1%. Hence, delamination error can be effectively minimized by making use of the inference about response variable obtained from the fuzzy model.
