Fuzzy Logic Based Energy Management of Solar Powered Electric Vehicle Charging Station
Abstract
Climate change and dependence on fossil fuels in the transportation sector have generated serious environmental problems. Increasing global awareness about a pollution free environment led to an increase in the number of Electric Vehicles (EV). Also, EV is an alternative to Internal Combustion (IC) engine vehicles. On the other hand, renewable energy based power generation systems are deployed on a large scale inorder to overcome the problems associated with fossil fuel based electricity generation. Inorder to promote the EV development, it is necessary to install Charging Stations (CSs), which supplies electrical energy for charging electric vehicles. The conventional charging stations are purely grid connected. Design and control of CSs are necessary for its proper operation. This paper mainly concentrates on the design and control of Solar Powered EV Charging Stations and proposes a Fuzzy Logic (FL) based Energy Management Scheme (EMS) to control the power flow within the system. The main objective of the system is to operate the CS in PV standalone mode. The proposed EV charging system modeled in MATLAB and verified system performance under varying irradiance and load conditions.
