Abstract

Capacitor banks installed at distribution network are commonly used for voltage stability by providing reactive power for power factor correction. Whenever capacitors switching occurs, a very high transient overvoltage providing, which can cause damage the distribution switchgear equipment’s.  This paper addresses transient over voltages and harmonics induced by capacitor banks energization in the distribution system.  A small-scale 11KV distribution as shown in text. Modelling and simulation are carried out using MATLAB / Simulink. All simulation results are shown in root mean square (RMS) values against the various switching times and for each phase. It also illustrates how the transient overvoltage propagates and duration of the transient is at the results. The experimental results provide insights of the capacitor switching overvoltage and produced harmonics.
