Abstract

The modern error control codes are expected to offer high error correction capability without affecting the data rate. The fifth generation (5G) networks should support ultra-reliable, low latency and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. Usually, control channels operate at low rates. Hence, the conventional Turbo codes are replaced by polar codes in 5G enhanced mobile broadband (emBB) control channels. In this work, the performance of polar codes is investigated for various code rates and channel conditions. It offers improved coding gains over the conventional convolutional and Turbo codes. Additionally, to check the compatibility of polar codes, it is coupled with multiple input multiple output (MIMO). The simulation results indicate that the performance of MIMO combined polar codes is superior due to the combined diversity and coding gains. Hence, the proposed polar coded MIMO system can be considered as a potential candidate for next generation networks.
