Enhancement of Bike Rental Services with Spatio Temporal Pattern Based Recommendation Framework

Abstract

 The public transportation services are the major transport medium in the day to day life. Bus, electric trains and metro train services are the widely utilized public transportation services. The public transportation service is not a complete solution for the people movement requirements. The vehicle sharing is another medium initiated in the metropolitan cities and tourist places. Bicycle, bike and car sharing schemes are introduced in Indian cities. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) provides free bicycle sharing schemes for the metro train passengers. Bike Sharing Systems (BSS) are adaptable for shot vehicle journeys with low pollution, low energy consumption and high flexibility. A user can easily rent a motorcycle with a sensible card at a close-by station and return it at another station in bike sharing systems. The bike sharing system is constructed with three major elements. They are service provider, station and the user. The service provider owned a number of bikes and stations. The stations are the check in and check out point for the bike sharing services. The user collects and returns the bikes from the station. The probabilistic forecasting scheme (PFS) is build with Monte Carlo simulation and random forest techniques for the prediction process. The bike rental services are enhanced with Spatio Temporal Pattern based Recommendation (STPR) scheme. The recommender model is applied to improve the rental and check out station suggestions to the users. The K-means clustering algorithm and Apriori (Association Rule Mining) algorithm are applied to discover the spatio temporal patterns. The dynamic pricing models, distance based incentives and peak load / supply based cost assignment suggestions are made with the discovered patterns.
