SPIRITUAL INTERVENTION FOR CANCER PATIENTS: A REVIEW ARTICLE"

Abstract

Objective: Cancer is characterized as life-threatening diseases and it shattered the psychological, emotional, spiritual well- being of the cancer patients. During cancer trajectory from diagnosis to treatment, the psychosocial and spiritual support has required to effectively cope with cancer-associated physical, psychological and social comorbidity. Spirituality based intervention plays an important role in minimizing these negative impacts of cancer. Method: In this study we review the research literature to examine the importance of spiritual intervention among cancer patients. We have searched the research data base Google scholar, Science Direct, PubMed central, Scopus from last 2009 to 2020. The present study summarizes the relevant research finding related to the conceptualization of spirituality and spiritual intervention in the context of cancer patients. Result: Very few studies have been found that have investigated the effectiveness of spirituality oriented psychological support and spirituality oriented intervention on cancer population, one of them are based on the principles of third- wave cognitive-behavioral therapy, and some of them are based on mindfulness and passage meditation and Islamic teaching. The spiritual counseling has considered as spiritual interventions. In the process of spiritual intervention, the counselor provided counseling to solve the patient's psychological problems according to his faith and spiritual powers. Conclusion: This summary of review of literature has indicated the need and effectiveness of spiritual care and spiritual intervention in context of cancer patients. This study recommends the high quality of more qualitative research on spirituality and spiritual intervention for cancer patients in India.
