A study on old age pension scheme in India

Abstract

The Indira Gandhi National old age pension scheme was introduced by the government to improve the quality of life of the older person by providing them with basic amenities. The main objective of this paper is to study the social and economic background of pensioners, to examine the role of state to alleviate the socio economic problems of the old age people and whether these pension schemes do really satisfy the needs of the pensioners.The research method followed is descriptive research. The data is collected through a questionnaire and the sample size is 200. Convenience sampling method is adopted in the study to collect the data. The samples were collected from the general public with special reference to Chennai region.The independent variable taken here is age, gender and educational Qualification. The dependent variables are the effectiveness of the government in providing pension to old age people, old age pension scheme is beneficial to the people and the old age pension scheme provides social protection to older people. The researcher used graphs to analyze the data collected. From all the analysis part of the research, it was found that financial assistance to the elderly empowers them and improves their social status, independence, self esteem and overall quality of life.
