Abstract

Numerous human activities produce huge amounts of solid wastes throughout the world and their management has become a technical and environmental challenge. Most of the garbage is removed in ecologically unsustainable manner that includes open dumping or burning. These environmentally harmful garbage disposal approaches may lead to losses of nutrients in the soil. Only a small quantity of waste is enzymatically decomposed with microorganisms as they have the ability to secrete enzymes and digest the waste materials. The main objective of the study is to find if the act of waste segregation is practised in Chennai and analyse the street neatness and residents contribution towards clean and healthy environment. An attempt is also made to analyse the role played by Tamil Nadu Municipality in solid waste management. The current study is based on empirical research. The research design is descriptive in nature.Convenience sampling method is used (Non probability sampling).  The sample size is 200. Data is collected through the primary and secondary sources. Questionnaire is used as the primary data collection and the articles, journals, reports, newsletters are considered as the secondary sources. The analysis is done by using SPSS 21 version. The analysis is carried out for demographic statistics (Gender, educational qualification) and bar graphs and Pie chart has been used to depict the outcome of the analysis. It was found that the respondents perceive that cleanliness in Chennai as above average but not at its best. It was found that majority of the age groups agreed that they dispose their wastes with the help of sweepers or dispose their wastes in other public places. The public must also be aware of proper waste disposal which is quite necessary in today’s world. The study found that the local bodies/communities must lend their hands in rehabilitating the previously existing dumping sites and measures have to be taken to identify new landfills for waste disposal. Research efforts should focus on biological methods of waste treatment that suite organic wastes and its geography.
