CORRELATION OF READING ATTITUDE AND INTEREST OF FRESHMAN STUDENTS: THE CASE OF ISU ILAGAN CAMPUS

Abstract

Positive reading attitude makes freshman students motivated and thereby possesses interest in reading.  The study aimed to determine the correlation of reading attitude and reding interest of freshman students of Isabela State University, Ilagan Campus.  Utilizing the descriptive survey research method, the study involved the one hundred eleven (111) freshman students who answered the attitude and interest survey questionnaire checklist.  Data were analyzed using the frequency and percentage, arithmetic mean, t-test and chi-square test.

 

In the light of the findings of the study, research concludes that as regards profile of freshman students, majority of the respondents are female, 16-20 years old, residing at the interior barangays, and graduated from public high schools.  Majority have book materials at home, with low educational attainment of parents, and having professional siblings in the family.

 

The freshman students showed a moderately favorable attitude in reading.  They have low level of reading interest.   Those younger, female students, from the interior barangays, who obtained secondary education in public high schools, with books as reading materials at home, whose parents with low education and with professional siblings in the family tended to have more favorable attitude in reading that their counterpart.    Younger freshman students who finished high school in public secondary schools, with reading materials at home and parents with low education and with professional sibling in the family tended to fare better in their reading interest.
