Abstract

There has been an excessive upsurge in the usage of computers for assorted tasks in recent years. In the medical field their role has become immensely inevitable. In almost all medical organizations and hospitals, significant handling of storage space and bandwidth has become a principal need, as huge volume of medical images have to be processed in runs together. Image compression makes an entrance as tool to lessen the communication bandwidth and save the memory space & transmitting power. Set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) is a wavelet based algorithm that is incredibly superior in speed that offers worthy compression ratio without compromising good image quality. This paper presents an optimized form of SPIHT implemented with MatLab programming and the efficiency is measured in terms PSNR, MSE, Entropy and SSIM.
