Abstract

In present research work, several solar stills have been studied based on heat storage. The major importance of the work is to summarize the various types of stills that can enhance the nocturnal distillate. The conventional type of stills was modified by providing heat storage in the basin. Moreover, heat storage of basin was also done outside of still by using a solar pond. Since the availability of solar radiation during day time is about 8-10 hours and during day time the atmospheric temperature is less as compared today. Hence the productivity of the still was increased by the temperature difference during the night hours. The productivity of solar still increased by 42%-53% over the conventional by using various sensible heat storage mediums in the basin such as sandbags, pebbles, etc. Similarly, the latent heat storage has been done in the basin of still using PCM, NPCM and found the productivity of still was improved from 28%- 32 % in excess of the convention type of still. Tubular solar still was used to enhance the distilled water production, and the depth inversely proportioned to the distillate output of solar still. The solar pond used to save heat for the period of light hours and supply it to the solar still for the duration of night hours to increase the efficiency of the solar still.
