Impact Of Internet And Social Media Usage Upon Adolescents And Young Adults: A Qualitative Enquiry

Abstract

The present study seeks to explore the impact of Internet and Social Media Usage upon Adolescents and Young Adults across the state of Jharkhand in India. The study is conducted as a qualitative enquiry using semi-structured questionnaire, personal interviews and focus group discussions across a sample comprising of students in selected schools and colleges across Jharkhand. Respondents were selected from across reputed English medium schools, business schools and degree colleges across selected districts in the Jharkhand state in India. 200 respondents were selected spread evenly across various institutions through systematic and random sampling methods employed at different stages of the selection process. The study found that there is excessive use of social media among the group on which the study was conducted and he need of the hour is to ensure that adolescents and young adults realize that their excessive use of Internet is leading towards a state of Internet Addiction and it needs to be checked before it results in more serious repercussions across various dimensions.
