Abstract

SS304 Stainless steel is one of widely used stainless steelwhich contains chromium, carbon and other alloying component like nickel, molybdenum, manganese and so on as its main constituents. SS304 stainless steel can be joined by different welding processes like Shielded Metal Arc Welding, TIG welding, MIG welding and explosion welding etc. Due to its materialistic properties, the weld bead of SUS304 is difficult to machine and to remove material from weld bead surfaces. Proposed research work concentrates on utilization of magnetic abrasive finishing process on removal of material from weld bead of SS304 stainless steel. Experiments are designed and performed to remove surface asperities of the weld bead of SS304 Stainless steel by using magnetic abrasive finishing process. Major threeprocess variables i.e. processing time, weight %age of abrasive and pole rotational speed have been selected to perform the experiment. Response Surface Methodology has been design the experiments. Experimental results prove that all selected process variable significantly influence material removal from SS304 weld bead surfaces.
