Vehicle Bumper Beam Of Aluminium With Using Honeycomb And Foam

Abstract

Bumper beams use as safety components of a car. During the accident, sudden impact force occurs in the car which absorbs by bumper beam and protects vehicle and passenger form damage and injury. A recent study has focused on increasing shock absorbing capacity with losing weight of the bumper beam. In this paper, a novel bumper beam with using polyethylene foam inner side and Aluminium honeycomb filled with polyethylene foam outside was showing better shock-absorbing capacity. Simulation for all bumper beams performed with structural steel beam, Aluminium beam with polyethylene foam and aluminium beam with honeycomb filled with polyethylene foam. The experiment performed between an existing bumper beam and a bumper beam which was best from simulation work and the result demonstrates that the aluminium bumper beam with polyethylene foam and al honeycomb filled with polyethylene foam ensures the better impact-absorbing capacity with reducing weight about 20% compared with baseline bumper beam.
