Abstract

The main components used in orthodontic treatment are orthodontic brackets and wires. In general, these components are made of stainless steel metal which can undergo corrosion processes, namely the release of metal ions that can have a negative impact on the body. Papaya leaves contain antioxidants that can be used as natural inhibitors in inhibiting the corrosion process. This study aims to know the effect of papaya leaf extract (carica papaya L.) in inhibiting the rate of corrosion of stainless steel orthodontic brackets and wires. This research is an experimental laboratory study with a post test with control group design research design using orthodontic wire and stainless steel bracket with a sample size of 5 with a wire diameter of 0.016 mm. This sample was divided into 5 groups with medias in the form of artificial saliva, namely 1 group without treatment and 4 groups with concentrations of 200ppm, 400ppm, 600ppm, and 1000ppm, respectively. Measurement of the release of Fe, Cr and Ni ions was carried out by using SSA and the results of this study were processed using SPSS version 24 and using the Independent Sample t Test with a significant value of 0.05 and correlation test. The results showed that the addition of papaya leaf extract had a significant effect (p <0.05) in inhibiting the ferrum ions release of orthodontic wires and stainless steel brackets. Papaya leaf extract has the effect of inhibiting orthodontic wire corrosion and stainless steel bracket.
