Abstract

Vortex tube used in injection mould industry was having lower cooling performance and more failure tendency. To study the potential causes of failure modes Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) is conducted. The main principle of FMEA is to determine cause of failure of the component or the process and plan remedial action for it which can be checked RPN number. In this research article, the risk priority number (RPN) is reduced from 196 to 112 after resolving frequent failure issue due to vortex tube material. The material selection is done on the basis of weighted average method. It has been found that Aluminium is best suitable material for vortex tube for injection mould application.

Keywords: Vortex tube, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Risk Priority Number (RPN), Weighted Average Method.
