Abstract

Cascaded multilevel inverters have emerged as a solution for medium power applications in the field
of renewable energy, machine drives, etc. In such inverter higher voltage levels with lower harmonics
profile is achieved by connecting inverters in cascade. But when the inverters connected in cascade
are fed from different sources at the input, the harmonic profile is affected and the performance of
CMLI decreases. This paper deals with the reduction of lower order harmonics in a cascaded
multilevel inverter with non-equal DC sources using a new optimization technique i.e. Salp swarm
optimization technique. The best sets of switching angles are calculated to improve the harmonic
profile. Theoretical studies are carried out using Matlab and the results shows that the proposed
technique is very effective in giving better results and it has the ability to escape the local minima
