Abstract

Today’s global market requires high quality product with the lowest cost. It refers to increase the
competition between manufacturing companies in terms of cost and quality. For that reason, companies
are seeking an advantage in manufacturing processes and quality control. However, process design is
costly and it is dependent to multiple factors. Therefore, factory managers need a preventive experiment
to define the factors that impacts to the value and quality of the final product. One of the fundamental
examples of experimental tool is design of experiment (DOE). DOE is experimental tool that engineers
can understand the process behaviour, the amount of variability and its effects on processes through
conducting in a series of trials or test. This paper studies the application of factorial design for
optimization of surface roughness in turning process. However, the turning operation is the most
fundamental metal removal operation in the manufacturing industry within these metal cutting processes.
Surface roughness, which is used to determine and evaluate the quality of a product, and is one of the
major quality attributes of a product obtained from turning operation.
