Abstract

Road transport plays an important role in the economic development and environmental sustainability of a country. The rapid increase in the number of vehicles results in traffic problems. In India 312.3 million tco2e per annum of air pollution is from the transportation sector which is estimated as USD 560 billion. The per capita fuel consumption and air pollutants (NOx, SOx, CO, HC) are huge from the vehicles. The computer simulation in traffic engineering helps to know about the complexity of traffic stream behavior in real-world traffic. The scientific research spent on optimization of traffic lights is very less. In this paper Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) model is used to improve the network performance of an intersection. The result shows that the vehicular emissions, fuel consumption and delays were reduced through signal optimization using Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) in SIDRA Intersection Software.
