POETRY TRANSLATION: POSSIBLE IMPOSSIBILITIES

  • Shuhrat Samariddinovich Sirojiddinov et al.

Abstract

The translator acts as a bridge that connects the ST text with the TT reader. Nevertheless, there is a stage in this process, usually, the initial one, where translators become recipients of a ST themselves. With very high possibility, a common reader has to read not the original in the translation, but the interpretation of the original made by the translator through the analysis of the text that is mixed up with translator’s personal background knowledge, emotional and mental capabilities and the level of their professionalism. The article discusses the poetic understanding of a text by the translator and their ability to recreate the poet’s original intention in a TT. The stanzas that are analyzed in the frameworks of the article were created by the prominent Uzbek poet Alisher Navoi, while the translation of them have been done by people, who are very good at translation but not familiar enough with the tradition of ghazal poetry of the author.
