Abstract

An environmental test of balm mint Melissa officinalis L. ‘Lada’ was carried out in three regions characterized by specific climatic conditions: Piedmont zone of Crimea, Central District of Non-Chernozem zone (Moscow Oblast ) and Western Ciscaucasia (Krasnodar Krai) to determine the most favorable cultivation conditions and to obtain high-quality essential oil and medicinal raw materials. Biological and economic indicators of the variety were taken into account in accordance with the test procedure for distinctness, uniformity and stability for M. officinalis. The analysis of essential oil content in raw materials from all the regions was carried out in the biochemical research laboratory of the Research Institute of Agriculture of Crimea. Significant differences in the yield of raw materials and the accumulation of essential oil depending on the ratio of temperature and humidity were shown. The best combination for the oil-forming process is high temperatures and moderate humidity. The results of the study allow concluding that the Piedmont zone of Crimea is the most favorable for the cultivation of this variety to produce essential oil. The collection of essential oil from the total and useful mass of air-dry raw materials (containing fractions of leaves and flowers), in two years on average exceeded that in Krasnodar Krai and Moscow Oblast , respectively, by 26.9 and 96.4% and 61.1 and 37.6%
