Twitter: Microblogging tool use in election campaigns

Abstract

In the beginning to 21st century, it has been observed average growth in internet users using social
media for message communication, making friends and exchange graphical posts. However, with
advent of online shopping, many multi-brands corporates such as Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra and
many more come into picture and start selling their products to their consumers on web.
Marginally, consumers started give their reviews about products they bought from these corporates
on social media and corporate used these reviews to predict future sale of products. Another vertical
in use of social media has been seen in express opinion about various political events on microbloggging website ‘Twitter’. It has been observed epidemic widen in use of Twitter’s users to post
opinion about political events that happen in their constituency with respect to polarity. Although
this growth some time touches sky in an election campaign schedule before a month of actual
polling. With the generation of this huge amount of posts on social media, it can be put into use to
predict emerge winner using machine learning techniques. In this paper, a review on various
social media analytic techniques applies to collect tweets and extract meaningful information from
tweets and further evaluation on machine learning techniques to perform polarity analysis.
