Abstract

Security is the key concern of each nation across the globe. A huge amount of the budget is allocated to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of the country. Security at public places poses a different level of complexity altogether owing to the enormous variety, huge number and wide distribution of people and ensuring their privacy throws a greater challenge. Hence, it becomes imperative to maintain such a security system that maintains safety and imposes a high level of order. Progress in the field of Internet of Things has made this possible.  Automation has paved the way to use biometrics as a validation of identity and hence has an essential application in the vast field of security.  This paper presents a survey of the security and surveillance systems adopted over the years, the challenges they pose and the use of biometrics in this field.
