Abstract

Fast growth of urbanization in India has resulted into increase in number of vehicles in small
corridors and consequently, due to inadequate road infrastructure, the hazard of noise pollution has
reached to an alarming stage. Due to the traffic conjunction, noise pollution accounts for two-third of
the total noise pollution in city area. Noise, a byproduct of urbanization, industrialization and
motorization, is increasingly recognized as a threat to the human health and the environment in
general. A study is made at the selected traffic points/locations in the city of Ahmadabad, which is a
fifth populous city of India according to census 2011 with estimated population of 9 million plus and
matching the vehicular growth rate with Mumbai. This study is based on actual measurements using
sound level meter (SLM-109) different signalized intersections located .Study is aimed at drawing
attention of the planners towards adequate road infrastructure, flyovers, modern signal system and
efficient traffic management and creating awareness of the people so that they may switch on to mass
transit facilities like Metro and BRTS.Outcome of the paper may help in limiting or reducing noise
level and create more eco-friendly and better wellbeing of the citizens of Ahmadabad.
