ECONOMICS OF FACULTY CRUNCH IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN INDIA: A QUALITATIVE & QUANTITATIVE PARADIGM

Abstract

Higher education has become lucrative in India because of privatization and more trusting upon the
private sources. The qualitative paradigm is also the matter to worry is in this valuable sector. One of
the most important components of quality is faculty, who delivers the exponential services to the
learners by focusing upon the higher education the then, former Education Minister Mr. Kapil Sibbal
had publically emphasized the faculty crunch in the premier technical education institute of India, i.e.
IITs, which is being acknowledged by the present Government. The policy makers have started way
back to solve this crunch in which one of the suggested alternatives is the outsourcing. This paper is a
genuine try to find out some statistical trends in such a vital sector of the economy. This research is
based upon secondary data only. The researcher’s efforts are in the direction to analyze the reasons,
trends, driving forces of employment in education sector etc. Finally, the findings of this research are:
there is significant volume of faculty crunch in higher education sector, the private sectors are more
vulnerable to the qualitative paradigm than the public sectors, mushrooming of the technical
education institutes has destroyed the spirit of technical education, as a result there is huge gap
between the demand and supply of the faculties.
