Abstract

The Smart grids with renewable energy systems and energy storage systems are becoming more popular as generation alternatives/ complements to the existent grids. Innovation in technologies are developing to make better implementation of these environment friendly grids for improving energy management scenario including better transmission congestion management. In smart grids, usually the Energy Storage Systems are used to store excess power generated during off-peak hours and to return the power to the system when power from Distributed Generators are not enough for the system or when the generation is too expensive. In this paper a MATLAB / Simulink model is presented in which the main grid is connected to a renewable source and a battery storage at the Point of Common Coupling for optimized scheduling of renewable energy system and energy storage system having controller. The work aims to establish that the efficiency and reliability of an existing grid gets improved with the advent of renewable energy resources and energy storage devices. Further, the presented work also reveals that by peak load shaving the reliability of the network gets improved.
