DISASTER MITIGATION AND COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS IN THE CITY OF PALU

Abstract

This paper aims to provide an overview of the condition of the people of the city of Palu at the time of the natural disaster of 28 September 2018. city ​​residents panic and a tense atmosphere occurred when the disaster came. City community preparedness to face disasters looks very minimal. This research method uses the type of qualitative research applied through the process of analyzing concepts and discourse as well as authentic facts contained in the field with various phenomenologies.The results of this study indicate that it turns out that the community does not yet have sufficient knowledge regarding mitigation and preparedness in the face of disasters. In addition, government authorities also seemed panicked when the disaster occurred so that it was less than optimal in providing services to disaster victims. The large number of victims is an indication of the unpreparedness of citizens and the government in dealing with disasters. Disaster mitigation policies should pay attention to all actions taken to reduce the effects of disasters and sensitive conditions in order to reduce greater disasters in the future
