Abstract

Environmental pollution due to heavy metals in the waste water is the most serious problem in India. The concentration of heavy metals increases in water over the period of years due to extensive anthropogenic activities, such as disposal of industrial waste water, industrial operation, agriculture process and particularly mining. Thus, this study is done to covert coconut shell into activated carbon that removes heavy metals. The coconut shell which is low cost, renewable and widely available is used as an inexpensive adsorbent material. There are many adsorbent methods for the removal of heavy metals out of which Chemical precipitation method is used to effectively eliminate chromium from contaminated water. The effect of adsorbent was studied by varying the contact time , pH and dosage of adsorbent. The characterization of the adsorbent was done through SEM analysis. The resultant data shows that coconut shell which is used as an activated carbon is an advisable technique.
