Unveiling Antecedents of Organizational Politics: An Exploratory Study on Science and Technology Universities of Pakistan

Abstract

Organizational politics is a major issue for several organizations and results in demotivation or even
resignation of competent employees. Several studies have been conducted over the impact of
organizational politics, however, literature is scarce over the antecedents of organizational politics.
Therefore, this exploratory study has been conducted to unveil those factors that trigger organizational
politics. Considering the severity of the issue in private universities, participants have been chosen from
the private sector science and technology universities, because of maximum organizational politics
there. For the said purpose in-depth interviews have been conducted to collect the data from
participants. Participants were selected on purposive sampling basis. Thirteen participants have been
interviewed who have at least five-years of experience. The findings of the research are very astonishing
as organizational politics is caused due to, individual incompetence, greed for money, fame, and power
extroverts’ behaviour nepotism, management financial interests, nature of organization, change in
management. Future researchers are guided to conduct the same search at college level or on the
government sector universities. Furthermore, a qualitative study is suggested on the unveiled factors
