Web 2.0 and its follow-ons have attracted much attention
recently, and a number of new consumer and business applications
have emerged. There has been media frenzy about Web 2.0, and on
the growth and influence of user generated content. From a multimedia
perspective, these developments raises a few important questions:
what multimedia and Web 2.0 have in common, where the two fields
meet, how they can benefit each other, and what are their potential
and impact on multimedia creation, distribution and use.
Recent advances in pervasive computing coupled with proliferation
of multimedia mobile devices and broadband wired and wireless communications
and Internet access have stimulated intelligent ubiquitous multimedia
applications and encouraged both the spread of multimedia and of
many of Web 2.0's more popular incarnations. For instance, consider
sites for sharing video such as YouTube, catch-all sites for blogging,
music sharing and video such as MySpace, immersive 3D virtual worlds
such world Second Life, many photo-oriented sites such as Flickr;
and a constellation of music-oriented sites such as Last.fm and
Pandora – all of them rely on user generated content (UGC)
and interaction.
As a result of these developments, a new multimedia revolution –
Multimedia 2.0 - is emerging which have already had and will continue
to have significant impact across a wide spectrum of consumer, business,
education, governmental, and social domains. Multimedia 2.0 presents
new opportunities, but also confronts and possibly threatens traditional
models of multimedia generation and distribution. The new multimedia
revolution raises many significant new issues and poses a number
challenges, much of which are yet to be fully understood and resolved.
An area that is assuming increasing significance is querying, searching,
retrieving and mining growing volume of multimedia information,
and the role folksonomy – user generated tags. As multimedia
embraces Web 2.0, it is essential to revisit several aspects of
creation (design and development) and delivery of multimedia and
multimedia applications.
This special session aims to specifically focus on embracing the
convergence of Web 2.0 and multimedia, and addressing the issues
and challenges the convergence present.
We seek quality papers which identify and address issues and problems
in successful development and deployment of the new generation of
multimedia, outline experiences in fielding these systems, and present
case studies. All accepted papers will be included in the conference
proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society (indexed by EI).
